Sunglasses Now Regulated

It hasn’t filtered down to local events YET, but it looks like by the time cyclocross season hits the KC metro, new technical rules that the UCI has developed WILL be implemented by USAC. And at local races.

Most likely by Manion’s Cross you will not be allowed to have “lawyer tabs” on your forks or wear knee socks.

The latest appendix to the myriad of equipment being monitored explains correct Sunglass/Eyeware usage:

“Sunglasses must remain firmly affixed to the front of the face, with ear stems at a 90 degree angle to a plane from forehead to chin”.  The rule continues (as we’ve intrerpreted it at Localcycling) to indicate the athlete must start and finish with the same shade of lens, despite weather conditions. In events that have a “pit” sunglasses may be removed only at that location, otherwise you must start and finsh with the glasses.

It is now illegal to place the sunglasses in the vent holes of your helmet OR behind your head. The rule stipulates that as long as the athlete is “on site” at a race venue, including a podium appearance, eyeware is strictly forbidden to be worn on top of the head “Euro Fashion Model Style”.
