The Leawood Police Department and the GP Velotek Womens' Bike Racing Team will be hosting a self-defense and safety class for women cyclists on Thursday, Dec. 14. The class is offered by the Leawood PD free of charge as a service to the community. The officers will demonstrate basic self defense strategies, emphasizing avoidance and escape tactics. Bike-specific approaches will be included.
The class will be held at Prairie Star Middle School, 14201 Mission Rd, Leawood, KS, from 6-8 pm. Wear clothes you can move in, and plan to arrive early enough to stretch before the class starts. Participants should park in the south parking lot. The class will be held in the northeast corner of the building.
Space is limited to 20 participants for safety, additional classes may be offered if there is a greater need. Young women under 18 should be accompanied by an adult. All participants will sign a liability release.
