Here’s a press release from the GP folks on the upcoming Stage Race. Stage Races are always an epic event to put on in our neck of the woods, these folks deserve some props.
(Lawrence, KS) – Team GP VeloTek, a Kansas City-area bicycle racing team, and Revolution Racing, are sponsoring the 3rd annual VeloTek Grand Prix on Saturday and Sunday, April 29 and 30, 2006 in Lawrence, KS. A Lance Armstrong Junior Olympic Race Series (LAJORS) event, all junior cyclists race free. With over $6000 in total prizes, this is the largest USCF Category 3 payout in the Midwest at $400 for first place.
The VeloTek Grand Prix features a short prologue time trial and a challenging criterium race on Saturday at Clinton State Park on Saturday morning. The road race takes place around Perry Lake, north of Lawrence, Sunday morning. Striving to increase participation in bicycle racing, the VeloTek Grand Prix focuses on the beginning and intermediate USCF categories (5, 4, and 3) and features the largest cash payout for a Category 3 race in the Midwest. There is also a $300 payout to the top General Classification Category 3 teams.
Bicycle racing in the Midwest continues to grow through local races like the VeloTek Grand Prix. “By placing emphasis on the beginning and intermediate levels of cycling, we’re growing the sport from the bottom up,” Team Director Jim Whittaker says of his LAJOR-sponsored race. “Junior cyclists have the opportunity to compare themselves against other young racers in the series.” To increase participation by adult beginners, Whittaker announced that there would be a new category added to the race this year. Masters 35+ Open Category will allow any category of rider above the age of 35 to compete as a group.
