Share the Road Safety Task Force Launches Safety Campaign
Three Easy Ways to Be Bright at Night
Kansas City, MO – With daylight savings time just a few days away, the Share the Road Safety Task Force is raising awareness about nighttime pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Individuals biking, walking, or jogging are not as visible to motorists as one may think. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration 2007 report, 67 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night.
Three easy actions taken by pedestrians and cyclists can increase their visibility and be the difference between life or death.
1. Wear bright or light colored clothing
2. Wear retro-reflective items such as vests, belts, ankle bracelets
3. Use a light
Visibility demonstrations and light give-away events will be held (weather permitting):
Thursday, October 29th Monday, November 2nd
English Landing Park – West Shelter House Loose Park – 55th/Wornall
Parkville, MO Kansas City, MO
Each event will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Local law enforcement, elected officials, Task Force representatives along with joggers, dog walkers and cyclists will share stories and demonstrate the importance of being visible at night. Visibility demonstrations will take place at 7:00 PM. Lights, reflective safety items, and educational materials will be distributed to the first 200 people at each event.
The Share the Road Safety Task Force is a group of local government agencies, law enforcement, public health, community organizations, advocates and others who are working to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes and fatalities in greater Kansas City.
