April 1, 2024.
After years and years of wishful thinking and crushed dreams, a hard surface wooden velodrome for track enthusiasts is coming to the metro.
Johan Charmin, owner of top cycling team, Royale Madrid, has persuaded the city of Lenexa to bulldoze the former “Old Town” and it’s blight of craft stores and coffee roasters for a world class cycling facility.
Of course the final hurdle is the slight sales tax increase that suburban voters are expected to overwhelming approve. Parking? With expected attendence of up to 15,000 rabid piste fans, the plan is to pave North of the site to 87th Street.
If the voters fail to pass the tax proposal, Mr. Charmin has indicated the team (and velodrome) will be located in some other country (or continent). Stay tuned for developments.
