Jeff Unruh is riding across the USA….you can read about his adventures as well as other area cyclists in our riders diaries section (see the link on the menu)…here’s an excerpt from Jeff’s:
"Today we travelled to Tucumcari, NM from Las Vegas, NM. We were all pretty toasted from yesterday’s up and down affair. 135 miles and 8500′ of climbing will do that to you. It was a beautiful climb out of Albuquerque to a plateau. Then it was on to the last of our ‘Interstate Love Affair’. This was our last time to ride on the Interstate! Of course I christened the occasion with a flat 10 miles from Las Vegas. That’s my 4th for the trip, all on the Interstate.
Today’s ride was supposed to be fairly easy as we had some gentle climbs and a big descent off of the mesa supposedly with a quartering tailwind. But right before lunch the winds changed and we had a block headwind off 15-20mph. Ouch! The last 35 miles took almost 2 hours with five of us working together so we didn’t have to stick our nose into the wind by ourselves. Reminded me of my training rides in Kansas with small rollers and of course lots of wind. Needless to say I felt well prepared.
Tomorrow we are "only" riding 97 miles but could be interseting as the weather calls for rain and … you guessed it , a headwind. Anyway, Thanks for reading and for daily updates check out bamacyclist.com and click on fast Ride 2006. Jeff "
