Cranksgiving

Here's a nice thing happening the weekend:

"On November 18th, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we're putting on an
Alleycat race, the second annual Cranksgiving. Last year's event, the
first, had 75 riders going all over the city collecting 4 Bicycle
Boxes full of non-perishable foods at grocery stores. This year, the
event originator and  organizer, Michael Forester graciously allowed
us to put on the event. The Kansas City Community Kitchen will be
around with a truck to pick up donations so the goal is to fill it to
the brim.

Just a reminder about this weekend's festivities. Thanks to Surly, New
Belgium Brewery, Whole Foods Market, Re-Load Baggage, Swobo, Nutcase
Helmets and the Kansas City Trial Nerds for prizes.

Over the last few years, I have been on the board of the Greater
Kansas City Bicycle Federation <http://kcbikefed.org/index.cfm>. Our
mission is to advance cycling as a viable form of transportation in
the area.

We've given out over 100 sets of lights, started a monthly Mocktail
Hour for bicycle commuters to gather and are working with the 816 Bike
Collective to build up, repair and maintain bikes in the inner city.

We start at 2 PM at the Discovery Center  4750 Troost Avenue Kansas
City, MO where everyone will receive a manifest and instructions on
what to buy. You'll ride to the grocery  stores, bring back your
items and receipts and meet at Acme Bicycle Company in the Crossroads
district for the after party and awards, actually the sculpture garden
behind Grinders Pizza. Awards go to the fastest and most complete male
and female and a special trophy, the Mott-ly Cup to the most generous.
We've got 3 bands, Brainbow, David Hasselhoff on Acid and Jim Button
Band, some refreshments and door prizes lined up. There will be food
available from Grinders.

You'll need to bring:
a Bicycle (You could actually run it if you're that hard-core)
about $10 to buy groceries
something to carry them (Basket, Messenger bag, bacpack, panniers)
a pen

If you're driving, you should probably drive to the Crossroads and
ride down to the start.
That's it. No entry fee (if you feel absolutely like you must pay
something, feel free to join the Federation
http://kcbikefed.org/files/membership/membership1.cfm or donate to our
light fund). I might add that the bands are playing for free so you're
also welcome to drop a few drachmas in their tip jar.

Thanks and Cranks to everyone involved.
