The Cyclocross (CX) bicycle offers versatility that makes it an ideal choice for commuting. The tough frame and fork is capable of enduring even off-road trails. The CX frame is built more stout than a road frame, but lighter than a mountain bike frame thus providing a happy middle-ground. The frames resemble road frames, but differ in geometry and wider clearance in both the fork and stays. These differences allow for greater control when riding through mud and gravel because the greater clearance allows the debris to fall aside instead of becoming caught between the bike and tire.
The wider clearance also allows for a wider tire. Typical cross tires are broader than road tires, creating more cushion and greater contact, but are less bulky than mountain tires. It is also possible to use a narrower tire in times when more road speed is required.
A well-fit CX bike offers a comfortable rider posture and a responsive geometry for great handling on trails as well as city streets. CX bikes are equipped with a gear range suitable for handling a hilly commute or challenging race course. Some models also include bar-top brake levers that offer an alternative braking position. Add fenders, lights and a rear rack to a CX bike to make it even better suited for commuting. Family Bicycles of Kansas City is proud to be a Redline dealer, offering a full line of CX bicycle models from entry level to race.
